Ruqya (Spiritual Healing)

** The following were notes taken from a Ruqya course that was held at Masjid At-Taqwa. **

Summarised by Umm Talhah

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said,

"Seek treatment, for indeed Allaah Has not placed a sickness, except that He has placed for it a cure, except for one sickness, and that is senility."  [Abu Dawood & Ahmad]

Treatment for illnesses/afflictions should be a combination of the tangible (i.e. medication, operations etc) and the intangible (i.e. treatment with legislated Ruqya)

Allah (swt) says in the Quran:

'And We sent down of the Qur'aan, that which is healing and Mercy for the believers'  [Israa 17:82]

One must learn how to perform Ruqya in order to benefit from it and to benefit others.
The prevention and treatment of all sicknesses have three stages:

1.    Knowledge of the sickness
2.    Fortifications and protection
3.    Treatment and cure

CAUSES OF SICKNESS

-   deficiency in remembering Allah
-   the spreading of envy, magic and evil eye among people
-   a person wronging a jinn in some way - eg urinating in a hole, where they may reside
-   EXTREME emotions eg fear, anger, sadness, lust
-   undressing completely without mentioning the name of Allaah. The Prophet (saw) said: "A cover is placed between the eyes of the jinn and the 'awrah of the children of Adam, when they take off their clothes saying, 'Bismillaah'."  [Bukhari & Muslim]
-   not praying nawaafil / Sunnah prayers in the home
-   having things in the home, which prevent the Angels entering - and thus making it easier for Jinn and shayateen to enter, eg dogs, pictures/sculptures of living creatures

PREVENTION & FORTIFICATION

-   Reliance upon Allah alone
-   consistency in morning and evening adhkaar (remembrance)
-   recitation of Surah Baqarah in the house
-   recitation of Ayatul Kursi [2:255] before sleeping
-   recitation of Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas
-   eating 7 Ajwa dates in the morning, based on the hadeeth,
"Whoever eats seven ajwa dates on the morning, then no poison nor sihr (magic) will harm him that day." [Bukhari]
-   eating 7 Dates from Medinah
-   entering and leaving his house with the Name of Allah
-   concealing good things, which you fear could invoke the evil eye - such as women and children on happy occasions, when they are beautified and adorned and therefore exposed to the evil eye
-   praying for blessings by one who fears he may afflict someone with the evil eye. The Prophet (saw) said, "When one of you sees something that amazes him, let him invoke blessings..." [al Hakim]
-   seeking protection and preservation for young children

TREATMENT

- Ruqya!

Definition: Ruqya is a formula of words, with which we seek protection by; Used by one afflicted with disease/harm e.g. fever; By means of reciting from the Quran or words of seeking refuge.

There are legislated and non-legislated methods of Ruqya. Of the legislated forms, there are three types:

1.    Direct Ruqya
2.    Over a medium
3.    Listening

1. DIRECT RUQYA

-   before sleeping, reciting the three 'Quls', dry spittle into the hands and wiping over oneself
-   placing hand on the site of pain and reciting relevant du'aas and aayahs, eg Surah Fatiha
-   reciting into a child's ear
-   having another person reciting and wiping over them

2. OVER A MEDIUM

Blow/dry spittle onto medium and then recite into it. Mediums such as olive oil and Zam Zam. Other things that can be used are:

-   Sidr leaves
-   Black seed
-   Olive oil, because it is from a blessed tree
-   Zam Zam water. "The water of Zam Zam is for what it is drunk for." [Ibn Maajah]
-   Rain water. "...And We send down blessed water from the sky." [Qaaf 50:9]
-   Cupping. "Indeed the best of your cures is hijaamah (cupping)..." [Bukhari & Muslim]
-   Honey.
"From their (bees) bellies comes out different colours, in it is a cure for mankind." [Nahl 16:69]
"It is upon you to take two cures: honey and the Qur'aan." [Ibn Maajah]

3. LISTENING

Listen to Ruqya CD's - those which are authentic. These recitations must have been done with the intention of reciting for Ruqya.

WHAT TO USE

-   Ayahs from the Quran, as the whole of the Quran is a cure.
Some portions of the Quran are more effective than others. In particular, Aayatul Kursi, Surah al-Falaq, Surah an-Naas, Surah Kaafiroon. Surah Yusuf - the ayah of the evil eye. Surah al-Jinn - the ayahs about sihr
-   duas - those from the Quran and from the authentic hadeeth
-   words e.g. 'I ask Allah to cure you'

CONDITIONS OF RUQYA

-   it must be from the Quran and Sunnah
-   it is better to recite in Arabic, but if that is not possible, then in a language that is understood and audible
-   the afflicted person must believe that Allah is the One Who cures
-   it can't contain anything prohibited
-   the one performing it should be in a state of ritual purity eg not in the state of janaabah

YOU ARE YOUR OWN PRACTIONER

As long as you are convinced about the benefits and importance of Ruqya in your life, then there is no need for you to go to someone else so that they can perform Ruqya for you. You are capable of doing Ruqya for your family and your children.

-   It is from the perfection of reliance upon Allah
-   A persons Ruqya for himself and his family calls for sincere devotion and great sincerity in turning to Allah and asking Him
-   The supplication of the one who is oppressed has great standing with Allah
-   The simplicity and ease of Ruqya and its accessibility to you at any time that you wish - enables one to be consistent upon it. This too has great benefit
-   Practising Ruqya regularly accustoms the people of the house to also practise it and act upon it, to protect and treat themselves.
